Yep, that's right. This card is For the Birds - the latest challenge going on at Pink by Design. We're making projects with a bird or birds.
The bird in my card is actually a bookmark, well a Smash Mark. It's part of the Smash line from Kay and Co. I've had it in my stash for a while. Although I have a Smash Book (way cool), I bought the birdie with the intention of using it on a card one day. Well, that day has come.
Not only am I entering it in the Ink it Pink challenge, but I am also throwing my hat in the ring for the Paper Crafts Magazine September challenge which is to use a natural element. Do you see the birdie's nest? It's burlap. I had been thinking and thinking and thinking about how I was going to perch this cutie. I initially thought of a branch, but couldn't figure out how to slide the bookmark into the branch without his bottom hanging out. Ha ha ha! Anyway, a bird's nest popped into my head. Then, I was like "How am I going to make a bird's nest?" And it occurred to me that burlap looks very similar to a bird's nest and also has a similar texture.
I cut the burlap, glued it onto brown cardstock, trimmed the cardstock and then added little scrap pieces of burlap on top of the existing layer to give it that messy look. After all, birds don't weave their nests in a perfect grid formation. Only humans do that.
For the base, I cut kraft cardstock 5.5x11 (5.5x5.5 finished). I adhered designer paper and then sewed it around the edges to give it a more shabby chic look. I stamped the sentiment from Pink by Design and then adhered the nest by gluing only on the bottom edge. This way the bird can slide out and the recipient can use it as a bookmark. Pretty fun, huh?

This is so cute. I think the little hearts on the bottom add just the right touch... subtle but super cute. Another amazing card!
